In this article you will learn how to start a dropshipping business in Australia in 5 key steps.
Dropshipping is an attractive business model where a customer purchases a product from your online store, you then purchase the product from your supplier and have your supplier pick, pack and ship it to your customer. So, no inventory needed. Once you’ve made the sale, your dropshipping supplier takes care of the rest.
Here are the key steps to starting a dropshipping business.
1. Market research
This is the most important step and should be the starting point for any dropshipping business in Australia. Your market research will help you discover a gap in the market that can be filled with a specific product and how to market and sell that product.

2. Find a supplier
Many dropshipping businesses start by creating a Shopify website, connecting it to Aliexpress using Oberlo and then adding products from the best Aliexpress suppliers they can find.
There is nothing wrong with this. In fact, it’s the quickest and easiest way to get your dropshipping business started. I’ve done it this way for a couple dropshipping businesses. In both cases, I was able to create my store, connect it to dropshipping suppliers and start running ads by the end of the day.
However, if you use Aliexpress, your products will be shipped from China, which means increased delivery times. This isn’t a huge problem if you manage expectations. It’s a good way to get started but shouldn’t be your long term plan.
Using Australian dropshipping suppliers
As mentioned, you can do it the quick way using Aliexpress. But, you could also take your time, spend a few weeks doing market research, find an Australian supplier for your chosen product and build a better brand for your dropshipping business. Even just a little bit of effort here will go a long way to increasing your chance of success. Even though you might have a good product idea at the moment, you might have a great product idea a few days from now and an amazing product idea a few weeks from now.

3. Create and connect your online store
Once you’ve done your market research, decided on a product idea and found a supplier, it’s time to create and connect your online store. Shopify is often the easiest and quickest way to get started and integrates with the majority of dropship marketplaces and apps. But WooCommerce is also great; giving you full control over your online store.

Note: some Australian suppliers don’t have software that connects your online store orders to their platform. So instead of this part being automated, you would need to manually order the product from them and enter your customer’s details. Some allow bulk orders via CSV file though.

4. Add Products
Apps like Oberlo, DSERS and Salehoo make this part very easy with an import feature. These import features add all of the necessary product information including images straight into your online store.
Alternatively, you can add them all manually. Sometimes this is better anyway because you have more control.
5. Drive traffic with paid ads
Now that you have done your market research, found a supplier, connected your online and added your products, it’s time to start driving traffic to your website.
Your market research should have uncovered where your ideal customer hangs out online and which social media platforms they use. e.g. If they primarily use Facebook, you should run Facebook Ads. If they primarily use Tik Tok, you should run Tik Tok ads.
For most online businesses, Facebook Ads is a great place to start.
