Below I’ll show you how to use Google Trends for Market Research.
Google Trends is an excellent way to give you a birds eye view of your idea.
Before getting started, you should have a product idea or niche in mind. If not, at least have a topic in mind that you would like to learn more about before using Google Trends.
How to use Google Trends for market research:
This will take ~ 10 minutes.
Follow the below steps to use Google Trends for market research.
- Go to Google Trends
Simply go to the Google Trends website.
- Type in your product idea, niche or topic
What do you want to research? Enter it here.
- Set country to worldwide
Start with worldwide before narrowing to your target country. Go wide before going deep to gain the most perspective and insights.
- Set time frame
Go through all time frames from ‘2004 – present’ all the way to the ‘Past hour’. Again, go wide before going deep.
- Start with ‘All Categories’
Set the category to ‘All Categories’. If you want to find new product ideas, remove the search term and then filter through each category.
- Start with ‘Web Search’
Use the ‘Web Search’ option before playing around with image search, news search, Google shopping and Youtube search.

The above steps will help give you a birds eye view of your business idea.
Don’t let Google Trends make or break your idea though. It’s just one of many market research methods.
